When Texas won independence in 1836, troops soon invaded nearby Santa Anna, whilst the Port of Houston was starting to grow. Its first dock was built in 1840 and the port was expanded in the 1870s. The Port of Houston continued to grow, including gaining oil refineries in the 1920s and 30s. The Port became the third largest in the USA in 1980.
