The Fuzhou Navy Yard was one of China’s first attempts at Western Technology and the seaport was opened in 1867. A Chinese Naval Academy was also opened on this site and became a place for people to study foreign languages and sciences. The port had very little to do with industry and was mainly a commercial centre until the Japanese occupied it during the Second World War. Since the end of the War, The Port of Fuzhou has expanded greatly and its main exports are paper, food and timber.
